Program Description:

About Tongji University

Tongji University’s history dates back to 1907, when Erich Paulun, a German doctor, founded the German Medical School in Shanghai with funding from the German government. It was re-named the Tongji German Medical School in 1908 and became a university in 1923, the word Tongji meaning "co-operation while in the same boat".

It is one of the first national universities in China, receiving its funding direct from the Chinese government. Nowadays, Tongji University is a comprehensive, research-oriented institution, covering 10 broad academic disciplines. There are 75 majors on offer to undergraduates, along with 15 professional master’s courses and three professional PhD programmes. In addition to nearly 19,000 full-time undergraduates, there are nearly 14,000 graduate students and more than 4,000 PhD candidates There are more than 2,000 international students enrolled at Tongji. 


About Shanghai

Shanghai or “Hu” for short, is a renowned international metropolis located on the estuary of Yangtze River, and serves as the most influential economic, financial, international trade, cultural, science and technology center in East China. Additionally, it is a popular destination for visitors to experience the pulse of China. The city’s modern, multicultural flair, endows it with a unique glamour. Shanghai has a perfect blend of cultures: modern and traditional; western and oriental. New skyscrapers along with old Shikumen together create the skyline of the city. Western customs and Chinese traditions intertwine to form Shanghai’s culture, making visitors’ stay in the city truly memorable.


Term date

  • Host Institutions usually organize orientation activities for exchange students, with some mandatory, which take place 1-2 weeks before the start of the term. You should refer to the acceptance package and pay attention to the expected arrival or pick-up dates specified by your host institution.
  • You should only depart after finishing all the final examinations (including resits) since host institutions will not make special arrangement for taking any examinations other than scheduled.

Eligibility

As stipulated by the host institution, only students from Hong Kong are accepted.
