HKUST Outbound Undergraduate Study Abroad Program: Semester at Sea (Visiting)

Semester at Sea is a multi-country study abroad program that allows students to take a full term’s academic credits offered by the Colorado State University on a ship that sails through 10+ countries. You will have the opportunity to explore countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia and experience a wide range of cultures, histories.
Note: The final itinerary rests with Semester at Sea.
Academic courses
Academic courses are provided by the Colorado State University. Semester at Sea will post class schedule information in August. Students are required to satisfy the host university’s credit load requirement, which may comprise enrolling in 4 courses, including the required core course, IE 200 Global Studies, for a total full-time load of 12 credits.
Upon completion of the program, Colorado State University will issue an official academic transcript. Students can then apply for credit transfer at HKUST following HKUST’s normal credit transfer application procedures.
HKUST Academic Registry Office is the office in HKUST that handles credit transfer application. Students are responsible to check with the host institution on the course/program completion requirements to be awarded the credits.
Program fees
This is a fee-paying program with fees charged by Semester at Sea. Students are responsible for settling the fees and all other related expenses. The program fee ranges from US $32,900 – US $36,100 (depending on the cabin types you are enrolled). Air tickets between Hong Kong and the embarkation & disembarkation ports are not included in the program fee. Students should also beware of the required visa(s) for entering all the ports on the voyage itinerary.

Funding offered by Semester at Sea
Discount scholarship
Semester at Sea will provide a discount scholarship of US$6,000 for admitted students enrolling on a fall/spring semester voyage AND not receiving CY Tung Scholarship. Separate application is not required. The scholarship will be applied towards partial settlement of students’ program invoice.
CY Tung Scholarship
Students may apply for the CY Tung Scholarship award of US$25,000. This scholarship is administered by Semester at Sea. A separation application is required.The application deadline is 19 September 2024 (Thu). For details, please refer to: https://www.semesteratsea.org/financial-aid/scholarships/c-y-tung-scholarship/. Students are only eligible to apply for the CY Tung Scholarship upon admission by Semester at Sea and have your deposit paid. Students are strongly recommended to submit an application to us as early as possible so that you can reserve more time to submit your application to Semester at Sea.

Eligibility
Students who have fulfilled the below requirements are eligible to apply for the program:
HKUST undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of study at HKUST by the start of the program and are not in their final term at HKUST; and
Are aged 18 or above at the time of embarkation; and
Are not currently committed to HKUST-organized exchange/study abroad programs in the same term.

Important Notes
A placement in a study abroad program is a valuable opportunity offered by HKUST for HKUST students. It is a valuable resource which must be used effectively without wastage. You are expected to think carefully about your participation in such programs before you submit your application. There should be thorough consideration to the financial and time commitment involved.
In order to participate in this program, students must apply for Leave from Study during the study abroad term. For details on how to apply for the study leave, please refer to the Academic Registry Website: https://registry.hkust.edu.hk/resource-library/leave-study-ug. Students must have your study leave approved before the program commencement.
OGL will have the final judgement on the program, including but not limited to program offering, selection procedures, nomination decisions and program completion.
Application Procedures
Click the "Apply Now" button on this page to complete HKUST application forms and submit supplementary documents. Please refer to below section “Required documents/materials” for details.
Make sure your click on "Submit Application" button on the application page in order to submit your application before the application deadline. No late applications will be accepted unless specified.
Application decisions will be released on MyStudyAbroad (with email notification sent to your HKUST email account) on a rolling basis. You are advised to check email regularly (including your junk folder).
In order to meet the nomination deadlines as set by certain host institutions, HKUST may process certain applications in sequence.
The decision you have received on MyStudyAbroad System will be regarded as a confirmation of HKUST’s nomination only. Students will also be required to complete another set of application forms to the host institution.
There could be cases that you may need to submit your application to the host institution very shortly after you receive OGL’s offer. If you decide to apply for this program, please be prepared that only a very short period of time would be given to complete necessary procedures.

Please prepare the documents listed below and upload on MyStudyAbroad System by the application deadline. It is not necessary to submit hard copies.

Selection Criteria
Selection is made taking into account the following factors:
Resume; and
Personal statement; and
Other supplementary documents.
Priority will be given to students who have not participated in exchange or study abroad programs organized by HKUST before.
Application Results
Results will be announced via MyStudyAbroad. The offer is a confirmation of HKUST’s nomination. The final admission decision rests with the host institution. You will not be guaranteed to be enrolled into any specific courses, as course registration is, in most cases, a separate process. If you decide to take this offer and confirm your participation in this program, you must be prepared to be flexible with the follow-up arrangements, including, but not limited to, course selection.
Accepting the offer
To commit to the offer, you must:
Follow the instructions in the MyStudyAbroad system to commit to the offer. This may require the signing off some forms in the system.
Declining the offer
If you do not commit to the offer by the deadline stated on your offer letter, we assume that you decline the offer.
Withdrawal and Penalty
Students who decide to withdraw from the program any time after committing to the offer for any reasons MUST inform OGL immediately via email at study.abroad@ust.hk.
Students who fail to inform OGL of the withdrawal will not be allowed to apply for any programs offered by OGL again in the future.
Students who withdraw from the program are expected to bear all the costs incurred, including but not limited to the tuition fee paid, the air ticket and related costs to travel back to your home country.
Visa Information
You will be responsible to ensure that you have the appropriate visa(s) and document(s) for participating in the program.
