Program Overview

About University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba aims to establish free exchange and close relationships in both basic and applied sciences with educational and research organizations and academic communities in Japan and overseas. While developing these relationships, they intend to pursue education and research to cultivate men and women with creative intelligence and rich human qualities.

The University of Tsukuba endeavors to contribute to the progress of science and culture. Formerly, Japanese universities tended to remain cloistered in their own narrow, specialized fields, creating polarization, stagnation in education and research and alienation from their communities.

The University of Tsukuba has decided to function as a university which is open to all within and outside of Japan. Toward this end, the university has made it its goal to develop an organization better suiting the functions and administration with a new concept of education and research highly international in character, rich in diversity and flexibility and capable of dealing sensitively with the changes occurring in contemporary society.
To realize this, it has vested in its staff and administrative authorities the powers necessary to carry out these responsibilities.

Term date

  • Host Institutions usually organize orientation activities for exchange students, with some mandatory, which take place 1-2 weeks before the start of the term. You should refer to the acceptance package and pay attention to the expected arrival or pick-up dates specified by your host institution.
  • You should only depart after finishing all the final examinations (including resits) since host institutions will not make special arrangement for taking any examinations other than scheduled.

Eligibility (for students applying via School of Humanities and Social Science)

SHSS students are eligible to apply for the outbound exchange program by meeting ALL the requirements below.

  • Must complete at least three regular terms of study in the program prior to exchange
  • With CGA 2.7 or above by the time of applying; CGA 2.5 or above for programs in mainland China
  • A proof of English Language Proficiency (as required)
NOTE: Nomination decision rests with SHSS while final decision rests with the host university.

Application Process

To apply, click the "Apply Now via SHSS" button on this page. The whole application process has two steps.

Step 1: Complete HKUST application form and submit supplementary documents
 
Step 2: The Host Institution Application (TO BE COMPLETED AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED BY YOUR SCHOOL)

If you are nominated, you will be notified to submit a formal host institution application. Your School will provide you with detailed information and application instructions in due course.
