About University of Massachusetts Amherst

UMass Amherst, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. The campus provides a rich cultural environment in a rural setting close to major urban centers.

About Amherst

A quintessential college town, Amherst is home to the prestigious Amherst College, a pretty 'junior ivy' that borders the town green, as well as the hulking University of Massachusetts and the cozy liberal-arts Hampshire College. The town green, where you'll want to start your explorations, is at the intersection of MA 116 and MA 9. Around the green you'll find a few busy streets containing several leftist shops and restaurants, as well as people in tweed reading books on the lawn. The town centers of Amherst and Northampton are separated by only a few miles, making the sights and amenities in one convenient to the other.

Term date

  • Host Institutions usually organize orientation activities for exchange students, with some mandatory, which take place 1-2 weeks before the start of the term. You should refer to the acceptance package and pay attention to the expected arrival or pick-up dates specified by your host institution.
  • You should only depart after finishing all the final examinations (including resits) since host institutions will not make special arrangement for taking any examinations other than scheduled.

Eligibility (for students applying via School of Humanities and Social Science)

SHSS students are eligible to apply for the outbound exchange program by meeting ALL the requirements below.

  • Must complete at least three regular terms of study in the program prior to exchange
  • With CGA 2.7 or above by the time of applying; CGA 2.5 or above for programs in mainland China
  • A proof of English Language Proficiency (as required)
NOTE: Nomination decision rests with SHSS while final decision rests with the host university.
 


Application Process

To apply, click the "Apply Now via SHSS" button on this page. The whole application process has two steps.

Step 1: Complete HKUST application form and submit supplementary documents
 
Step 2: The Host Institution Application (TO BE COMPLETED AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED BY YOUR SCHOOL)

If you are nominated, you will be notified to submit a formal host institution application. Your School will provide you with detailed information and application instructions in due course.
