Program Overview

About Leuphana University of Lueneburg

Originally founded in 1948 as a teacher-training college, Leuphana University of Lueneburg was granted university status in 1989. Leuphana is a young university that lays emphasis on innovation, rather than tradition. It is continuously aspiring to create a space stimulated by a collective search for knowledge and sustainable solutions.

About Lueneburg

Located between Hamburg and Hannover, Lueneburg is an attractive and historic town on the River Ilmenau, surrounded by the Lueneburg Heath in the North German state of Lower Saxony. The town lies about 50 km southeast of Hamburg and is is the capital of the district of Lueneburg with a population of around 70,000. In the town centre, you may encounter its history wherever you go, and it becomes evident that salt was the most valuable asset back in the day. Salt was extracted in the Lueneburger Saline (Lueneburg Saltworks) for more than 1,000 years. Trading this precious “white gold” meant that the town accumulated wealth and commanded respect in the Middle Ages.
