Program Description:

About University of Washginton

The University of Washington (UW) is a public flagship research university based in Seattle, Washington, United States. Founded in 1861, Washington is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. The university has three campuses: the primary and largest in the University District of Seattle and two others in Tacoma and Bothell.


About Global Innovation Exchange Summer Program

The GIX Summer Program is a two week innovation “boot camp” designed to introduce participants to the skills they will need to take an innovation from concept to development and on to launch. Modeled after the University of Washington’s interdisciplinary Master of Science in Technology Innovation (MSTI) curriculum, week one of the GIX Summer Program will offer intensive workshops in design thinking, technology development, and entrepreneurship taught by GIX faculty and leaders in industry. Week two will place participants alongside GIX graduate students and industry sponsors to work on current projects providing participants with practical insight to the launch process. Participants will also have time to enjoy the vibrant culture and spectacular scenery of the Seattle metropolitan area.

Two weeks from 9 - 20 July 2018

  • You should arrive before the start of the program. You should refer to the host institution’s acceptance package and pay attention to the arrival information.
  • You should only depart after completion of the program.


Fees

GIX will cover the costs of participants’ round-trip, economy class airfares, and the costs of housing in shared student accommodations. Program participants are responsible for payment of a US$500 program fee, as well as the cost of most meals, visas (if applicable), excursions and other personal expenses.


Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for GIX Summer Program if you:

  • are entering final year of a bachelor or undergraduate degree with an excellent academic record;
  • have completed at least one introductory course in computer science or programming, statistics, applied math or physics. Preference will be given to applicants who are pursuing an Engineering focused major or minor;
  • demonstrate interest in cross cultural collaboration; and
  • have a cumulative CGA of 3.0 or above (Students with CGA below 3.0 may also apply. Offers may be given with special consideration.)

Application Process

HKUST students must apply through the Global Student Programs Office. Individual direct application to the program will not be accepted.

Step 1: Complete HKUST application form and submit supplementary documents (CLICK HERE for details)
 
Step 2: The Host Institution Application (TO BE COMPLETED AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED BY HKUST)

If you are nominated, you will be notified to submit a formal host institution application. Detailed information and application instructions will be provided in due course.


Financial Assistance

Visa Information

Participants may be required to apply for a student visa. The host institution will provide the necessary documents for visa application purpose.


Health Insurance

HKUST students who take part in the University's exchange programs will be covered by the University's Travel Insurance Plan. To apply for an insurance certificate, please CLICK HERE.


Accommodation

Participants will be housed in shared student accommodations arranged by the host institution.
