About Peking University

Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan"(the garden of Yan), is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing, with a total area of 2,743,532 square metres (or 274 hectares). It stands near to the Yuanmingyuan Garden and the Summer Palace.

PKU has effectively combined research on important scientific subjects with the training of personnel with a high level of specialized knowledge and professional skill as demanded by the country's socialist modernization. It strives not only for improvements in teaching and research work, but also for the promotion of interaction and mutual promotion among various disciplines.

About Peking University Summer School

Peking University Summer School is a program offered to students from universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Participants will take classes taught in Mandarin and there are excursion trips during the weekends.

 

Students who are nominated by HKUST must take course(s) to form a study program of at least 3 consecutive weeks' duration.

1 July - 4 August 2024

* Notes:

  • You are expected to arrive on 29 June for student dormitory check-in. Please refer to the host institution’s acceptance package for the arrival information.
  • You should only depart after completion of the program.


Fees

Participants will need to bear the tuition fee, accommodation fee, travelling expenses (flight and/or train tickets for departure and return) and personal living expenses. The host institution covers the fees of local visits and activities.

Tuition fee: CNY1,500 per credit


Eligibility

HKUST students must apply through the Office of Global Learning. Individual direct application to the host institution will not be accepted. You are eligible to apply for the program if you fulfill the requirements listed below:

  • HKUST full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of study at HKUST by the start of the program are welcome to apply* unless specified.
  • CGA 2.0 or above unless specified.
  • As stipulated by the host institution, priority will be given to students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan^. International and Mainland students may also apply and the applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 
  • Are not currently committed to other summer study abroad programs offered by HKUST Office of Global Learning (OGL) or Schools; and
  • Have not withdrawn from HKUST Summer Mainland Programs offered by OGL in the past; and
  • Priority will be given to students who have not participated in exchange or study abroad programs organized by HKUST before.
*Students who are in the final year of the undergraduate program are welcome to apply if they fulfil the above requirements and NOT apply for graduation in Spring.
^By definition, students will be considered as a Hong Kong student and Macao student if you enter Mainland China with home return permit. Students will be considered as a student from Taiwan if you enter Mainland China with Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents.

Application Procedures

Enrollment is on a FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE basis. The whole application process has two steps.

Step 1: Click the "Apply Now" button on this page to complete HKUST application forms and submit supplementary documents. Make sure your click on "Submit Application" button on the application page in order to submit your application.
Step 2: Host Institution Application - If you are nominated, you will be provided with details to submit a formal application to the host institution application if necessary.

You MUST submit the following documents by the application deadline on MyStudyAbroad. It is not necessary to submit hard copies.

Important notes
  • A placement in a study abroad program is a valuable opportunity offered by HKUST for HKUST students. It is a valuable resource which must be used effectively without wastage. You are expected to think carefully about your participation in such programs before you submit your application. There should be thorough consideration to the financial and time commitment involved.
  • Students may apply for more than one program given that the program requirements are fulfilled. However, each student is restricted to commit to one offer only and you should note the penalty details if you decide to decline an offer or withdraw from an offer after acceptance.


Application Results

The results will be announced via MyStudyAbroad on a rolling basis. Students should check the mailbox regularly. The offer is a confirmation of HKUST’s nomination. The final admission decision rests with the host institution. The host institution also does not guarantee that you will be able to enroll into any specific courses, as course registration is, in most cases, a separate process. If you decide to take this offer and confirm your participation in this program, you must be prepared to be flexible with the follow-up arrangements, including, but not limited to, course selection.


Accepting the offer

Each student is restricted to commit to one offer only within the same term. To commit to the offer, you must:

  • Follow the instructions in the MyStudyAbroad system to commit to the offer. This may require the signing of some forms online in the system.
  • To commit to the offer, you are required to submit a deposit of HK$2,000 by the deadline stated on your offer letter. This deposit will be returned to you (i) upon submission of the official transcript issued by the host institution, and (ii) OGL's review of your study abroad report submitted by the deadline. If you subsequently withdraw or fail to complete the program, the deposit will not be returned.


Declining the offer

  • If you choose to decline the offer given by OGL, you will have lower priority in your future application for the summer programs offered by OGL.
  • If you do not commit to the offer by the deadline stated on your offer letter, we assume that you decline the offer.


Withdrawal and Penalty

  • Students who decide to withdraw from the program any time after committing to the offer for any reasons MUST inform OGL immediately via email at study.abroad@ust.hk.
  • Students who withdraw from the program any time after committing to the offer will lose the eligibility to apply for HKUST Summer Mainland Program in the future and the deposit will not be returned.
  • Students who fail to inform OGL of the withdrawal will not be allowed to apply for any programs offered by OGL again in the future.


Study Plan & Credit Transfer

  • Academic Registry Office is the office in HKUST who handles credit transfer application.
  • Students are responsible to check with the host institution on the course/program completion requirements to be awarded the credits.
  • Students are expected to take courses offered in face-to-face mode only even the program has an option of online mode of delivery. Taking online classes and examinations would affect the credit transfer results.


Travel-related Information

Students would need an appropriate travel permit to travel to Mainland China. Your travel permit validity should cover the whole study abroad program period. 


Insurance

HKUST students who take part in the University's study abroad programs will be covered by the University's Travel Insurance Plan. Please CLICK HERE for details.


Accommodation

Accommodation will be arranged. No separate application is required. More information will be available in due course.
