About Tohoku University

Tohoku University was established as Japan's third national university in 1907. Located on the ancient site of Aoba Castle in Sendai City, Tohoku University is proud to be ranked among Japan's leading universities.

About Sendai

Sendai City, situated in centeral Miyagi Prefecture, is the largest city in the Tohoku region. It has prospered as the capital of the Date Clan since its first feudal lord, Date Masamune, who reigned over this district and built Sendai Castle at the beginning of the 17th century. Explore the site of Sendai Castle or rest and relax in the Mt. Aobayama neighborhood, which has been transformed into a splendid public park.

Sendai is known as the "City of Trees." The main avenues, Aoba-dori and Jozenji-dori, are lined with rows of beautiful zelkova trees, and during the Christmas season, the trees are illuminated by lights for the "Sendai Pageant of Starlight" event. The zelkova tress also a spectacular sight with their fresh verdure in spring and scarlet-tinged leaves in autumn. The Ichibancho shopping area, which crosses Chuo-dori Avenue and runs parallel to Aoba-dori Avenue makes for a delightful shopping excursion with local shops and many smaller stores lining the side streets. After shopping, relax and dine at any of the 3,000 restaurants, all clustered around Kokubuncho, located on the west side of Ichibancho area.

Term date

  • Host Institutions usually organize orientation activities for exchange students, with some mandatory, which take place 1-2 weeks before the start of the term. You should refer to the acceptance package and pay attention to the expected arrival or pick-up dates specified by your host institution.
  • You should only depart after finishing all the final examinations (including resits) since host institutions will not make special arrangement for taking any examinations other than scheduled.

Eligibility (for students applying via School of Humanities and Social Science)

SHSS students are eligible to apply for the outbound exchange program by meeting ALL the requirements below.

  • Must complete at least three regular terms of study in the program prior to exchange
  • With CGA 2.7 or above by the time of applying; CGA 2.5 or above for programs in mainland China
  • A proof of English Language Proficiency (as required)
NOTE: Nomination decision rests with SHSS while final decision rests with the host university.

Application Process

To apply, click the "Apply Now via SHSS" button on this page. The whole application process has two steps.

Step 1: Complete HKUST application form and submit supplementary documents
 
Step 2: The Host Institution Application (TO BE COMPLETED AFTER YOU ARE NOMINATED BY YOUR SCHOOL)

If you are nominated, you will be notified to submit a formal host institution application. Your School will provide you with detailed information and application instructions in due course.
