About Beijing Institute of Technology

Beijing Institute of Technology is a public university with a traditional focus on science and technology but developing into other areas such as management and humanities. The Institute emphasizes ethics in scholarship, discovery of truth, and contribution to mankind through profound academic accomplishments. BIT was founded in 1940 in Yan’an, Shaanxi Province and was relocated to Beijing in 1949. BIT is now under the direct administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

BIT is dedicated to developing lofty ideals and sound scholarship, a strong body and a quiet heart; evolving a pragmatic and humble spirit, and creating a culture of excellence; and improving research capabilities, and achieving distinction in defence technology.

BIT has always formulated its strategies in light of national strategic needs and global developments in science and technology and education, and in accordance with its own strengths and missions. These strategies include: consolidating its strengths in mechanical and vehicle engineering and automation; leveraging its advantages and distinctive programmes in IT-related disciplines; and developing new strengths in aerospace engineering. BIT will build its strengths in both science and engineering, and simultaneously develop disciplines in management and humanities.

BIT has four faculties—Faculty of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering, Faculty of Information and Electronics, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Materials, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences—with 24 Schools & Departments. BIT comprises more than 3,300 faculty members and 30,700 full-time students. Over 14,000 are undergraduate students, nearly 10,000 are graduate students and around 5,000 are doctoral students.

About Beijing

With a population of more than 12 million people, Beijing, also called “Jing” is a bustling metropolis that is the capital city of China. The city is arguably one of the most historical and cultural cities and ancient capitals in the world. As the country’s political, cultural and international exchange center, Beijing hosted the Olympic Games in 2008.

Beijing offers visitors a bevy of more than 200 tourist attractions and 7,300 historical sites. The immensely popular Great Wall at Badaling, Palace Museum, Temple of Heaven, which is the largest imperial palace in the world where emperors of old paid homage to heaven, the Summer Palace, are some of Beijing’s must-sees. At dusk, a plethora of live entertainment, including Chinese operas, acrobatics and traditional dining options are to be sampled.

Special note

• Host Institutions usually organize orientation activities for exchange students, with some mandatory, which take place 1 week before the start of the term. As stipulated by the host institution, there may be extra quarantine measures required by the host institution on top of the mandatory measures imposed by the government. You should refer to the acceptance package and pay attention to all the important information provided by your host institution.
